Third-party fundes within the B-PHAGE project, supported by STEP Saxony-Anhalt

You will support fundamental research on bacteriophages and take on key experimental and organisational responsibilities in the laboratory. The project focuses on the molecular basis of phage–host interactions in Staphylococcus aureus and on establishing the groundwork for the rational development of phage therapy.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Culturing of S. aureus strains as well as propagation, amplification and purification of bacteriophages
  • Performance of standard microbiological assays (plaque assays, titrations, growth curves, host range determination)
  • Establishment and maintenance of the phage and strain collection, including cryopreservation and database management
  • DNA extraction and preparation of samples for sequencing (library preparation, Oxford Nanopore)
  • Preparation of media, buffers and solutions, and organisation of laboratory operations (ordering, responsibility for instruments, maintenance and calibration records)
  • Careful documentation of experiments and preparation of results

Your Profile:

  • Completed vocational training as a biomedical laboratory scientist (MTL/MTLA), laboratory technician in biology (Biologielaborant:in), BTA, CTA or an equivalent qualification; alternatively, a completed degree in biology, biotechnology or a related discipline
  • Confident command of standard microbiological and molecular biology methods and reliable aseptic technique
  • Willingness to work under BSL-2 conditions
  • Careful, well-organised and dependable working style, with meticulous documentation
  • Experience working with bacteriophages or staphylococci is an advantage
  • Enjoyment of working as part of an international research team
