Your personal sphere of play:

The Department of Sociology, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, combines scientific research and teaching at the University of Vienna. The Department of Sociology is influenced by the historical traces of the Viennese Sociology, which is dedicated to the understanding of social problems, empirical research, and sociological theory.

At the Department of Sociology the position of a University Assistant (post-doc for the duration of 6 years, part-time, non-tenure track) is to be filled from 1 September 2026. You work in the field of quantitative social science and will have the opportunity to work in a team with interdisciplinary and international networks, while further developing your own independent research profile.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:

You are an active member of the research team "Social Stratification and Quantitative Methods" (Chair: Nadia Steiber).

You further develop your independent research profile in one of the following areas: work/employment, family, education, migration, health.

You participate in research projects and scientific studies in the field of quantitative social research using large-scale register data.

You publish in renown scientific journals and present your research internationally.

You independently teach courses at BA and MA level within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.

You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.

You take on administrative tasks in research and teaching.

This is part of your personality:

Completed doctoral/PhD studies in Sociology, Economics, Demography, or a related discipline with a focus on quantitative methods

Outstanding dissertation

Excellent research competencies in one or more of the following research fields: social inequality/mobility, education, labour market research, family sociology/demography, migration, life course research, wellbeing/health

Extensive expertise in the field of quantitative methods, particularly in the areas of panel data analysis and causal inference; experience with Austrian register data advantageous

Excellent programming skills in STATA, R, or Python.

Excellent track record in terms of international publications in peer-relevant media

Willingness to acquire third-party funding.

Passion for excellent teaching.

Excellent English skills (C1).

Team player with high social/communicative competence.
