AFS Energy is looking for a final-year university student to join us as a working student. You will

maintain our existing GO price forecasting model, test it in a shadow portfolio and explore how

the model can be used commercially to support trading decisions in European renewable

energy markets.

About AFS Energy

AFS Energy is an international-oriented scale-up in the heart of Amsterdam. We deal with

opportunities and developments in Renewable Energy every day. With an increasing number of

organisations striving to reduce their emissions, AFS Energy has emerged as a key player in

Europe, offering crucial support in achieving sustainability goals. Our work involves

procurement, market access and advisory services across various environmental markets. From

transitioning to renewable energy sources such as green electricity and green gas to promoting

CO2-reduction projects, the possibilities for making the world a more sustainable place are

limitless.

About the project

We are extending our use of data for trading in environmental commodities. You will maintain

the existing GO price forecasting model, test it thoroughly and explore its practical and

commercial applications.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maintain, monitor and improve the existing GO price forecasting model.
  • Test the model in a shadow portfolio and evaluate its performance in real market

conditions.

  • Analyse results and identify opportunities to use the model for trading support.
  • Explore how the model can be made commercially viable and determine which insights

should reach which stakeholders (traders, portfolio managers, product development,

etc.).

  • Apply econometric, time-series and machine learning techniques to interpret model

outputs and market behaviour.

  • Document assumptions, model logic, data sources, test results and limitations clearly.
  • Collaborate with Product Development, Portfolio Management and the GO trading desk.

Who we’re looking for

  • Final-year university student (bachelor or master) in Econometrics, Quantitative Finance,

Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Business Analytics, Computational Science or a

similar quantitative field.

  • Strong analytical mindset with a proactive attitude and drive to make an impact.
  • Solid experience with Python, R or MATLAB for quantitative research, statistical

modelling and time-series analysis.

  • Familiar with machine learning techniques and forecasting methods.
  • Comfortable working with large datasets and backtesting approaches.
  • Independent thinker who identifies challenges and proposes practical solutions.
  • Team-oriented with an entrepreneurial spirit and genuine interest in trading and

renewable energy markets.

Nice to have:

  • Previous experience with model maintenance, quantitative research projects or shadow

portfolio testing.

  • Knowledge of energy markets, financial markets or commodity trading.
  • Experience with version control systems (such as Git) and documenting code, models

and data pipelines.

  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding and analytical workflows.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

What we offer

  • A unique workplace on the historic Stock Exchange floor in the city centre.
  • Working in an awesome, internationally diverse (35+ nationalities), continuously growing

and highly driven team.

  • An organisation where there is room for your refreshing ideas and to be entrepreneurial.
  • Focus on your personal and professional growth with support through training, coaching

and development sessions.

  • The opportunity to broaden your network by attending (inter)national events and

congresses.

  • Depending on where you live, an NS train travel card or bike lease options.
  • Free in-house gym.
  • Sponsored in-house lunch facilities.
  • Regular fun team and company events plus the AFS Friday afternoon drinks.
