Description
Umeå Institute of Design (UID) is seeking two Teaching Assistants (Amanuenses) for employment during the Autumn Semester 2026 and Spring Semester 2027. One position focuses on media production for social media, and the other focuses on workshop support.
Both positions correspond to 10% of full-time employment, with a start date in October 2026 or as agreed. The application deadline is 13 September 2026.
Duties and responsibilities
Media Production Assistant
Working in collaboration with the Communications Officer, you will:
- Ensure that the photography studio is kept organised and well maintained.
- Manage and monitor the loan of photography equipment.
- Provide support to the communications team in photography and video production, primarily for social media channels.
Workshop Assistant
Working in collaboration with workshop technicians and the building technician, you will:
- Perform various service and maintenance tasks.
- Monitor and operate digital fabrication equipment, including laser cutters, 3D printers, and cutting machines.
- Check and maintain workshop machinery with regard to functionality and safety features.
- Help ensure that workshop facilities are organised and well maintained.
- Provide materials and supplies to other students.
- Lock and close workshop facilities when required.
- Assist the building technician in daily operations.
- Instruct fellow students in various workshop techniques when time permits.
Qualifications
We are looking for individuals who possess strong collaborative skills and enjoy working closely with communications and technical staff. You are service-oriented, well organised, and able to work independently while taking responsibility for your assigned duties. You contribute positively to an inclusive and well-functioning study and work environment.
To be eligible for employment as a Teaching Assistant (Amanuensis), you must:
- Be admitted to first-cycle (undergraduate) or second-cycle (master’s) studies at a university or higher education institution, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (HF 1993:100).
- Be enrolled in the Bachelor's Programme in Industrial Design (Year 2 or 3) or in one of UID's Master's programmes.
For the Media Production position, we are looking for applicants who:
- Have an interest in media production for social media.
Experience with photography and video production for social media is considered an advantage.For the Workshop position, we are looking for applicants who:
- Have an interest in workshop activities and the duties described above.
Previous experience of similar tasks is considered an advantage. Selection will be based on applicants’ qualifications, suitability, and previous experience relevant to the position.
Terms of Employment
As a Teaching Assistant (Amanuensis), you will be employed by Umeå University. The position corresponds to 10% of full-time employment during the Autumn Semester 2026 and Spring Semester 2027 and must be carried out alongside your studies.
Salary is determined in accordance with the local agreement governing remuneration for Teaching Assistants at Umeå University.
The employment will commence in October 2026, or as agreed, and will begin with an introduction and training period conducted by experienced staff at Umeå Institute of Design.
The position requires continuity and regular on-site presence during the academic semesters. Therefore, it is advantageous if you are available for most of the academic year. Any periods of limited availability, such as internships, may be discussed during the recruitment process.
