Senior Software Engineer (Backend)
Málaga, Spain
You apply off-site, with the employer or the job board. I never handle applications.
Backend Engineer (Java/Spring Boot), my first hire at Teatown
I'm Lucas, founder of Teatown, a software and observability engineering consultancy working with regulated enterprises across the German-speaking world.
Business is good. Good enough that I can't carry it alone anymore.
So I'm hiring the first person to build this with me.
Let me be straight with you, because it's the whole point.
You'd be employee number one.
No big team to disappear into.
No thick playbook to follow.
You'll own real work at real clients, mostly on your own, with my name riding on the outcome.
If that excites you more than it scares you, keep reading.
What you'd actually do
You'd take the lead on backend engineering for our clients. Java, Spring Boot, cloud-native.
Early on that means two things:
- You become the go-to engineer for a client I'm about to bring on.
- And you take backend work off my plate at a client I already serve, so I can breathe again.
But here's the part that matters most.
You won't just write code. You'll be the person the client trusts.
That means understanding what they actually need, and delivering it without being told twice.
I won't be looking over your shoulder. Frankly, I'm hiring you so I don't have to.
Because the moment the work leaves your hands and lands at a client, you're on the hook. And so am I.
The quality bar I care about most is the one you hold yourself to when nobody's checking.
What you need
Non-negotiables
- At least 7 years building and running large-scale backends, with real Java and Spring Boot experience among them. The 7 years don't all have to be in Java or Spring. If you've spent years in another high-level language and know your way around Spring Boot too, that counts. What matters is that you can build and run backends at scale, and also build from scratch.
- At least 7 years in cloud-native environments. Microservices, containers (Docker or Podman), ideally Kubernetes or OpenShift.
- Experience leading a dev team or being the lead developer. You know how to own a codebase and set the standard, not just follow one.
- English at C1 or above. You'll work in it every day.
- You live in Spain, ideally in or near Málaga.
- Or you're a German-speaking native from Austria or Germany, ready to move down here and genuinely excited about it. The sun, the sea, and a young company to help shape. Let's talk.
Nice to have, and it'll make you stand out
- German at B2 or above. Most of our clients are German-speaking, so it's a real edge.
- Experience with a hyperscaler like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
- Any exposure to observability. OpenTelemetry, the Grafana stack, Prometheus, etc.
What you get and how we work
Let’s talk money first.
The minimum salary is € 60.000,-
If your experience overshoots the abovementioned requirements, the salary may even be higher.
On top of that, you get a flexible package of additional benefits depending on your needs and life circumstances.
Benefits could look like this:
- Food voucher (up to 11€ daily)
- Financial support for public transport (up to 1500€)
- Financial support for the Kindergarten
Flexible hours. I care about the outcome, not whether you're at your desk at nine sharp.
A full-time day that starts early and wraps up mid-afternoon works great, and there's room to shape it around your life.
And you can work from anywhere for part of the year, as long as the timezone still works for the client you're serving.
Also, you choose the environment you work with. Meaning, you get to choose between the main OS providers.
Your setup will look like this:
- Laptop of your choice (macOS, Linux, Windows)
- Company phone
Where we're heading
Observability is Teatown's long game. Helping clients make their systems transparent, stable, and future-proof.
You don't need to arrive an expert. You need to want to go there.
I'll take you deep into it, because it's where I'm taking this company.
If growing into a specialty alongside the founder sounds like an opportunity and not a question mark, you're exactly who I'm looking for.
Interested?
Tell me a bit about yourself and the work you're proudest of. I read every message personally.
P.S. On the fence but curious? Reach out anyway. Happy to talk it through.
