About Emergent
Emergent is a Delft-based company dedicated to revolutionizing autonomous aerial systems for defense and emergency response. We develop and deploy software for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) that enables platform-independent collaborative autonomy, and we build the Counter-UAS (C-UAS) systems that detect, track, and defeat hostile drones in denied and cluttered environments. Our technology leverages decentralized swarming algorithms and multi-sensor fusion to tackle real-world challenges at scale.
We have successfully attracted significant capital and grants, and we are working with clients and strategic partners across Europe and allied countries — strong signals of market traction. Backed by experienced advisors, we offer the chance to join a 20-person team pushing the boundaries of autonomy and counter-drone defense, with real autonomy and influence over what we build.
The internship
We are looking for a full-time Full Stack UI/UX Engineering Intern to join our engineering team for six months.
Our team is responsible for a full-stack application used to plan, supervise, understand, and control autonomous multi-agent systems. This makes the internship broad and dynamic: you will work at the intersection of interface design, frontend development, backend systems, autonomy, and real-time data.
You will begin with smaller, well-scoped features while learning how the application and the wider system fit together. As you become more familiar with the product and demonstrate that you can take ownership, you will have the opportunity to pick up larger and more complex tasks. You will work closely with UI/UX, robotics, and systems engineers, with regular support and feedback from the team.
The role will always include frontend work, but it is not limited to the frontend. Depending on current projects, your interests, and your abilities, you may contribute across the stack.
What you could work on
Most of your work will likely contribute to our full-stack UI application. Other possible projects include:
- Designing and building features for mission planning, monitoring, and control
- Connecting user interfaces to real-time autonomy, simulation, sensor, and command-and-control systems
- Improving how operators understand system state, decisions, alerts, and mission history
- Developing mobile or Steam Deck integrations
- Exploring 3D interfaces and visualizations
- Making complex system configuration easier and safer for users
- Prototyping or developing VR and AR interactions
- Contributing to backend services, APIs, data flows, and application architecture
The exact mix will depend on the needs of the team and the direction in which you want to grow.
What we are looking for
- You are available full-time for a six-month internship
- You are studying computer science, game design, or a related field, or you have a comparable background such as 42
- You have some experience building user interfaces and are interested in working across both design and engineering
- You are comfortable programming and want to develop your frontend and full-stack skills
- You can translate complex technical behavior into interfaces that are clear and useful
- You are curious, proactive, and willing to learn unfamiliar technologies
- You communicate well and enjoy collaborating across disciplines
- You are eligible to work with us; EU or NATO citizenship is required
You do not need prior experience with autonomous systems, but you should be able to demonstrate relevant technical or design work and a strong interest in learning the domain.
Because this internship includes a meaningful amount of frontend and UI/UX work, it will not be a good fit if you are looking for a backend-only position.
Useful experience or interests
Any of the following would be helpful, but none are required:
- Frontend frameworks and web technologies
- Python, C++, Java, or another backend language
- APIs, WebSockets, event-driven systems, or real-time communication
- UI/UX design, prototyping, usability, or information visualization
- Games, simulations, robotics, drones, autonomy, or sensor systems
- 3D tools or engines such as Blender, Unity, Godot, or similar
- Mobile, Steam Deck, VR, or AR development
- Linux, Git, and GitHub
What we offer
- A six-month, full-time internship in a deeply technical startup environment
- Internship Compensation
- Hands-on work on real features used in autonomous and real-time systems
- The chance to contribute across UI/UX, frontend, and backend engineering
- Close collaboration with experienced UI/UX, robotics, and systems engineers
- Responsibility that grows with your skills and confidence
- Exposure to UAS, counter-UAS, simulation, 3D, and emerging interface technologies
- The opportunity to shape how people interact with complex autonomous systems
- Commute compensation
How to apply
Send us your CV and a short introduction explaining why this internship interests you. We would also love to see a portfolio, GitHub profile, personal project, game, prototype, or other work that shows how you think and what you like to build. Your portfolio does not need to be polished or purely visual; student and unfinished projects are welcome when they help us understand your contribution and process.
Please also include your preferred start date and confirm that you are available for a full-time, six-month internship.
