Description of the workplace
The Division of Atomic Physics at the Department of Physics, Lund University, has a staff of approximately 50 researchers, including visiting researchers and doctoral students. The research at the division is primarily based on the use of advanced laser sources, ranging from diode lasers to terawatt lasers at the High-Power Laser Laboratory. The research areas include the interaction between intense laser fields and matter, attosecond science, quantum information, solid-state X-ray spectroscopy, laser applications in medicine and biology, as well as industrial applications. The position advertised is attached to the Attosecond Physics group and more particularly to a team working on ultrafast optics developments.

Work duties
The main duties involved in a researcher position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development.
The researcher position is proposed around the following project:
Manipulation and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses for high-order harmonic generation and its applications.
The project focuses at generating ultrashort laser pulses, e.g. with the help of nonlinear pulse post-compression techniques, their detailed characterization in the temporal and spatiotemporal domains as well as their manipulation in space and time with the goal of finding new ways to the control of high-order harmonic generation and applications of attosecond pulses.
The tasks include:
- Operation and development of femtosecond laser systems
- Development of pulse characterization techniques
- Advanced nonlinear optics
- Generation of attosecond pulses by harmonic generation in gases
- Potential collaboration with industrial partners
- Exploring applications of the developed source(s)
Duties also include co-supervision of master and doctoral students.
Qualifications
Appointment to a researcher position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position. The certificate proving the qualification requirement is met, must be received before the employment decision is made.
Required qualifications for the position are:
- A PhD or equivalent research qualification within Physics.
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
- Theoretical and practical experience in ultrafast optics and nonlinear optics
Additional qualifications for the position are:
The assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject. The following criteria will be applied in the assessment:
- A proven track record to develop and conduct high quality research
- Experience within ultrashort pulse characterisation
- Practical experience with femtosecond lasers and/or high-order harmonic generation
- Works well in group
- Teaching skills.
- Other qualifications, such us mathematical programming and programming within laboratory automatization, data analysis, vacuum technology, optical and mechanical design
Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.
Further information
The position is a fixed term position for the period 2026-11-01 until 2027-10-31 at 100 per cent of full time. Researchers are covered by a local collective agreement on annual working hours for researchers and assistant researchers. The planning of annual working hours is done in dialogue between the manager and the employee.
