Amentum is seeking a HAZMAT / HAZWASTE Handler / Shipper to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The HAZMAT / HAZWASTE Handler / Shipper is responsible for the safe and compliant management, handling, packaging, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials (HM), hazardous waste (HW), other regulated waste (ORW), and medical waste.
Job Responsibilities:
- Completing the collection, packaging, transportation, and shipping of hazardous materials (HM), hazardous waste (HW), and excess HM in compliance with applicable standards, including the Diego Garcia Final Governing Standards (DGFGS) and the Contractor’s accepted Discarded HM/HW/ORW Management Implementation Plan.
- Assisting in the management and operation of the Hazardous Waste Storage Area (HWSA), Satellite Hazardous Waste Accumulation Points (SHWAPs), and the Hazardous Material Minimization (HAZMIN) Reissue Center.
- Completing initial and annual refresher training in hazardous waste management in compliance with DGFGS, 40 CFR 265.16, and other applicable regulations.
- Ensuring the accurate handling and disposal of HAZMAT/HAZWASTE, whether through past experience (minimum one year) or completion of the HAZMAT/HAZWASTE handling course.
- Submitting qualifications and certifications to demonstrate compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Ensuring all shipments of hazardous cargo are certified in accordance with required procedures, including qualifications obtained from the Naval School of Physical Distribution Management, Oakland, CA, or the School of Military Packaging Technology, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. These certifications require biennial refresher courses and must remain current.
- Conducting inspections of hazardous materials and waste to ensure compliance with storage, handling, packaging, and disposal safety standards.
- Transporting hazardous waste with proper certifications and in compliance with 40 CFR 265.16 training requirements.
- Maintaining accurate records of all hazardous material and waste management activities, including tracking waste generation, shipment, and disposal.
- Supporting training and providing guidance to other team members on the proper handling, packaging, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Required to comply with all occupational safety and health standards, rules, and orders applicable to their actions and conduct. The role demands consistent, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proactive reporting of workplace hazards, and total adherence to safety protocols to maintain a zero-injury environment.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.
Required Qualifications:
- At least five (5) years of experience in the collection, transportation, shipping, and disposal of hazardous waste (HW), hazardous material (HM), and other regulated waste (ORW).
- At least five (5) years of documented experience operating hazardous material or waste facilities such as HWSA, SHWAPs, or the HAZMIN Reissue Center.
- Qualification to certify outgoing shipments of hazardous cargo, obtained through training at the Naval School of Physical Distribution Management, Oakland, CA, or the School of Military Packaging Technology, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
- Qualification is valid for two years and must be maintained through biennial refresher training.
- Training in compliance with 40 CFR 265.16 for personnel transporting hazardous waste.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must complete the HAZMAT/HAZWASTE Handling course or have a minimum of one year of experience working with hazardous materials or waste.
- Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Passport should be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
- Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain requirements for the duration of deployment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Must be able to speak, read, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce is preferred.
- Valid country driver’s license.
- Strong knowledge of DGFGS standards and hazardous material and waste management regulations.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and safety compliance skills.

Working Environment
This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.
Physical Requirements
Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
