Front End Engineer

About the role

We're rebuilding app.dealroom.co, our data-dense VC scouting platform, from the ground up. You'll join our existing frontend team, reporting to our Lead Engineer, working on a single React application (about 90,000 lines of hand-written code) plus our internal design system, Nexus.

There's no dedicated product designer on this team, so you'll own UX decisions directly, from token system to shipped screen. And this is a genuinely agentic engineering environment: your leverage comes from specifying constraints a machine enforces (tests, fitness checks, skills, docs), not from typing out every implementation by hand. If you enjoy working with AI tooling rather than around it, you'll be at home here. If you want to hand-write everything yourself, you'll be slower than the team around you.

What you'll work on

• Data-dense product UI: high-capacity tables with complex selection models across pagination, an interactive canvas board handling thousands of items, a WebGL map with clustering and choropleth layers, and a filter builder with natural-language parsing.
• Design system (Nexus): contributing components that ship with a story, a play function, and an accessibility pass, consumed by both the new app and our legacy product.
• SSR and data architecture: working within our TanStack Start / Router / Query pattern, migrating remaining pages onto loaders.
• Performance: our JS and CSS bundle sizes are budgeted and enforced in CI. You'll treat performance as a constraint from day one, not a cleanup task.
• Multi-tenant architecture: our platform serves 127 white-labeled ecosystems from one shared codebase, each with custom theming and domain-scoped authentication.

What the process looks like

A take-home assessment runs against our zero-setup mock environment (no backend, VPN, or credentials required), with two tracks to choose from: contribute a component to our design system, or build a small product surface against realistic mock data. We'll also ask which parts you delegated to an AI agent and where you overrode it. It's one of the most telling questions we ask.

What we're looking for

• Strong React and TypeScript experience, ideally in a strict codebase (no any, no unused locals).
• Genuine comfort with data-dense interfaces (tables, canvases, complex filtering), not marketing sites.
• A habit of reading the rule before reaching for the tool. Most of our conventions exist because someone got burned once; we'd rather you understand why than route around it.
• Real enthusiasm for agentic development workflows: we run dozens of skills and sub-agents, an in-CI agent, and automated review lanes.
• Sound judgement about AI and bot output. Reviewing machine-generated suggestions critically, and pushing back when they're wrong, is a core part of the job here, not an exception.
• Confidence designing and defending a UX decision without a designer in the loop.
• A track record of treating tests and performance budgets as part of the change itself, not an afterthought.

Not part of this role

• Backend, SQL, or data-pipeline work (the frontend and backend are firewalled workspaces).
• Design tooling. There's no Figma here. Design intent comes through tickets and docs, and you'll help shape it.
