Description of the workplace
The position is placed at the Division of Solid-State Physics at the Department of Physics, a division with around 100 employees where extensive research is carried out centered on various aspects of nanophysics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics to various applications. The division is a central part of NanoLund, Lund University's large interdisciplinary research center on nanoscience and nanotechnology. The research center includes also Lund Nano Lab, a central and shared cleanroom facility for the production of materials and components at the nanoscale. The Division has a strong commitment to undergraduate education, not least in the Master's programme "Engineering Nanoscience" at LTH. This position is part of a research group consisting of three doctoral students with individual projects where collaboration leads to good group development.
You will join a research group that conducts experimental research in quantum topoelectronics. We aim to develop novel quantum devices, including qubits, by harnessing electronic correlations and topology in two-dimensional materials. Being a doctoral student
As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed at Lund University.
As a doctoral student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. In short, you will be trained to think critically and analytically, to solve problems independently using the right methods, and to develop an awareness of research ethics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, to develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by supervisors. Doctoral studies end with a thesis and a doctoral degree.

Subject and project description
This PhD project focuses on the DC characterization and microwave-frequency investigation of anyonic excitations in graphene-based quantum devices.
The doctoral student will fabricate ultrahigh-quality van der Waals heterostructures in Lund Nano Lab and study them using low-temperature electronic and microwave measurements. The student will also contribute to establishing a new experimental laboratory, including infrastructure for van der Waals device fabrication and the installation of a dilution refrigerator reaching temperatures below 10 mK, equipped with a 14 T magnet and both DC and RF measurement lines.
The position provides extensive hands-on experience in nanofabrication, cryogenic measurement techniques, microwave electronics, data analysis, and the physics of quantum devices. The student will be an important member of a collaborative research team and will work with research groups at Lund University and leading international institutions. The project combines fundamental quantum physics with a technology-oriented approach to developing new types of nanoelectronic and quantum devices.
Work duties
You will primarily devote yourself to your doctoral programme, which includes participation in research projects as well as third cycle courses, seminars and conferences. The purpose of the PhD project is to build anyons arrays and to operate them as qubits. You will work independently as well as in close collaboration with the other partners in the project.
The work duties include:
- Device fabrication in cleanroom environment in Lund Nano Lab.
- Transport and high-frequency microwave measurements, including programming of measurement scripts.
- Analysis of the measurement results to gain understanding on their operation and to design new devices.
- Writing scientific publications on the results and presenting them at conferences.
- Using, servicing, and developing equipment in the measurement labs, including the installation of a dilution refrigerator.
- The duties also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (however, a maximum of 20% of working hours).
Qualifications
To be eligible for admission and employment as a doctoral student, you must fulfil the requirements below.
Admission requirements
A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if the applicant:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
A person meets the specific admission requirements for third-cycle programme in Physics, if they:
- completed at least 45 second-cycle credits in physics, engineering physics or an associated field, or
- has a second cycle degree in physics, engineering physics or an associated field.
Additional requirements
In order to complete the doctoral programme in question, the following are also required:
- good knowledge of quantum physics.
- good ability to work independently and to formulate and tackle research problems.
- good written and oral communication skills.
- good ability to cooperate.
- very good knowledge of English, spoken and written.
Other qualifications(advantages)
For this doctoral position, particular consideration will be given to candidates with:
- Knowledge and experience on quantum device.
- Experience on electrical measurement.
- Experience on cryogenics.
- Knowledge and experience of nanofabrication processes.
- Experience in van der walls stacking processes.

About the employment
The employment is afixed-term employment at full time, starting as agreed, preferrably starting from January 2027. Third cycle studies at LTH consist of full-time studies for 4 years. In the case of teaching and other departmental duties, the employment is extended accordingly. Doctoral studentships are regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), chapter 5, 1-7 §§.
