Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.
Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb
The research group is affiliated with the national Data Driven Life Sciences (DDLS) program and SciLifeLab (https://www.scilifelab.se/researchers/kimmo-kartasalo/). We conduct international cutting-edge research in computational pathology and artificial intelligence (AI), and have for several years developed AI models that assist pathologists in assessing prostate biopsies. We are now adding analysis of radiological images to our AI-analysis and are looking for a research assistant to support this work. We believe in close supervision where each team member takes clear ownership of their work, and the position offers good opportunities to go deeper, for example through a degree project.
Your mission
The project aims to bring AI for prostate cancer diagnostics a step closer to clinical use. The focus is to build up competence regarding the analysis of radiological image data with AI, as well as assisting ongoing computational pathology projects. As a research assistant, you will contribute to this work alongside your studies, working closely with researchers in computer science, statistics and medicine.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Digitising prostate biopsy glass slides with WSI scanners and quality-checking the resulting whole slide images.
- Developing and maintaining Python-based pipelines for processing and analysing medical image data, such as whole slide images and MRI.
- Contributing to the evaluation of AI models for prostate cancer diagnostics.
- Documenting and reporting results to the research group.
This is an hourly-paid position with flexible working hours, corresponding to approximately 20% of a full-time position.### Your profile
The applicant is expected to possess the following skills and experience:
- Completed Bachelor’s of Science in artificial intelligence, data science, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, medical image analysis or a related field.

- Previous experience of working with MRI data.
- Experience of developing deep learning models, e.g. transformer-based models, for medical data.
- Experience of developing and optimising Python-based pipelines for the analysis of clinical data.
- Experience of designing evaluation strategies for AI systems.
- Ability to work well independently and together with others.
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
The following skills and experience are considered meriting:
- Experience with statistical modelling or biostatistics, e.g. survival analysis.
- Research experience from a cancer research environment.
- Experience with multimodal models combining different types of clinical data.
- International and interdisciplinary research experience.
- Interest in robustness, uncertainty and validation of AI models for clinical use.
- Other knowledge in biomedicine, digital pathology or computer science is an advantage.
