Our values are Commitment, Collaboration and Transformation.

Our research lines focus on the newly-discovered physical and chemical properties that arise from the behaviour of matter at the nanoscale. ICN2 has been awarded with the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence distinction for three consecutive periods (2014-2018 and 2018-2022 and 2023-2026). ICN2 comprises 20 Research Groups, 7 Technical Development and Support Units and Facilities, and 2 Research Platforms, covering different areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Job Title: Research support technician

Department: NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry

Description of Group/Project: The NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry (NanoESC) group at ICN2 conducts research at the intersection of electrochemistry, materials science and in-situ characterization to develop novel electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion and sustainable chemical production.

The successful candidate will support an industrial collaboration project focused on the development of advanced transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media for green hydrogen production through PEM water electrolysis. The project involves materials characterization, electrochemical evaluation and in-situ UV-Vis spectroscopic studies to establish structure-activity relationships and accelerate catalyst development.

Main Tasks and responsibilities:

Preparation and handling of catalyst samples for characterization and electrochemical testing.

Operation of X-ray diffraction (XRD) instrumentation for phase identification and crystal structure analysis.

Support in the characterization of materials using complementary analytical techniques.

Preparation and execution of electrochemical experiments, including:

Cyclic voltammetry (CV)

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)

Chronoamperometry

Chronopotentiometry

Performing in-situ UV-Vis spectroelectrochemical measurements.

Processing, analysis and reporting of experimental data.

Maintenance of laboratory equipment and implementation of good laboratory practices.

Preparation of technical reports and documentation for project meetings with industrial partners.

Support senior researchers in the execution of research activities.

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree (or completed succesfully the TFG) in Chemistry
  • Knowledge:

Fundamental knowledge of materials characterization techniques, basic understanding of X-ray diffraction, knowedge of electrochemistry principles and techniques, knowledge in electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical characterization of electrocatalysts for OER, familiarity with scientific data analysis software and good laboratory practices and safety procedures.

  • Professional Experience:

Previous laboratory experience in materials characterization and/or electrochemistry is required, experience with UV-Vis spectroscopy or spectroelectrochemical techniques is desirable and experience in academic or industrial research projects is advantageous

  • Personal Competences:

Strong attention to detail and experimental rigor, good organizational and time-management skills, ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team, problem-solving mindset and proactive attitude, communication skills in English is desirable and motivation to work in renewable energy and sustainable technologies research.
