Part-Time Lecturer: “Information Technology in Business and Society”

NYU Madrid is seeking a part-time lecturer to teach the course “Information Technology in Business and Society” during the fall and spring semesters, beginning in Spring 2027 (mid January - early May 2027). The course is mainly for majors from the Stern School of Business at NYU and economics majors from NYU Shanghai.

The course is taught in English. The specific parameters of the course are included below. Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.

Course Description

“Information Technology in Business and Society” is premised on the idea that information technology changes society and business in understandable, if not always predictable, ways. The course focuses on what information technology does – and is doing – to individual workers, firms, markets and economies. By the end of the course, students will be able to reason through questions at the intersection of technology and society.

A secondary goal is to expose students to a variety of technologies and methods that are having a large impact on how we understand and interact with the ordered world. Examples include: relational databases, online advertising, data analytics, recommender systems, and online experiments. This secondary and more practical focus of the course is not designed to provide students with mastery in these technologies, but rather to get students from “don’t know what you don’t know,” to “know what you don’t know.”

Some topics that the course covers include:

1. How to publish information on the Internet, model and analyze decisions using a spreadsheet, and get information from relational databases.

2. How information systems contribute to effective business strategy and how they are developed and implemented by organizations.

3. How to evaluate and analyze information-based products and services in industries that have a growing digital or technology-based component. Topics include the economics of information pricing, technological lock-in, network effects, etc.

4. Special topics such as digital music, information privacy, data mining and digital piracy.

Undergraduate teaching experience and a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Economics, Management Science or Organization Science are required. A strong background with technology and technology platforms is also required. Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.
