The Institute for Theater Studies at Freie Universität Berlin combines the disciplines of theater, dance, film, music, and culture and media management, providing a range of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

The Institute for Theater Studies offers an international and interdisciplinary research environment, which includes various clusters of excellence, collaborative research centres, and graduate schools. The institute houses its own library, a media department, and extensive archives within its theater and dance collections, providing abundant resources for students and scholars.

The post is part of the division of critical dance studies. Research and teaching engage with interdisciplinary, theoretically

informed, and historically wide-ranging approaches to cultures of dance. The Master’s program in critical dance studies is taught in English.

Job description**:**

• Research on independent projects and contribution to the research culture of the Institute for Theater Studies especially in the field of critical dance studies
• Teaching (according to the teaching duty regulations) and assessment in the Institute’s Bachelor program in theater studies and the Master’s program in critical dance studies
• Contribution to the coordination and course design of the Master’s program in critical dance studies
• Selective administrative duties for the Master’s program in critical dance studies and the Institute for Theater Studies
• Coordination of cooperation with dance institutions

Requirements**:**

PhD in critical dance studies; alternatively, PhD in theater studies or adjacent fields, with a focus on dance.

At least three years of academic or specialist practical work in a full-time employment relationship after graduation is required.

Desirable**:**

• Record of excellent publications in interdisciplinary, theory-informed critical dance studies
• Research interests in decolonial approaches and in dance cultures before 1900
• Excellent knowledge of English (C2) and good proficiency in German (B2)
• Teaching experience in critical dance studies
• Experience in project management including web presence
