Role Overview
We are building the next generation of autonomous UAV systems and are looking for an Electromagnetic Engineer to lead EM design, integration, and compliance across our drone platforms. You will work at the intersection of RF, power electronics, antenna systems, and EMC to ensure mission-critical performance in demanding environments.
Key Responsibilities
· Design and optimise RF/microwave subsystems for command & control (C2) links, telemetry, and payload communications
· Lead EMC/EMI analysis, testing, and mitigation across the full UAV stack (airframe, avionics, payload)
· Develop antenna systems including patch, monopole, conformal, and phased array designs for multi-band operation
· Perform link budget analysis and RF coverage modelling for BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operations
· Conduct signal integrity analysis on high-speed PCBs and flex circuits
· Collaborate with mechanical, power, and firmware teams to ensure EM compatibility at system level
· Support regulatory compliance: FCC, CE, DO-160, MIL-STD-461, STANAG
· Define EM test plans, manage test campaigns in an EMC chamber or open-area test site (OATS)
· Investigate and resolve interference issues between onboard systems (GPS, video downlink, LiDAR, ESCs)
· Create and maintain EM design documentation, test reports, and compliance records
Requirements
Must-Have
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in electrical engineering, RF Engineering, or related field
- Hands-on EMC / RF engineering experience
- Proficiency in EM simulation tools (CST, HFSS, ADS, or equivalent)
- Experience with spectrum analysers, VNAs, and EMC test equipment
- Solid grounding in Maxwell's equations, transmission line theory, and antenna fundamentals
- Familiarity with UAV or aerospace platform constraints
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with software-defined radio (SDR) platforms
- Knowledge of FHSS / DSSS modulation for resilient datalinks
- Familiarity with drone regulations: CAA, EASA, FAA Part 107
- Anti-jamming, GPS spoofing mitigation, or secure comms background
- Exposure to MIL-STD-461 or DEF STAN 59-411 environments
- Experience with SWAP-C (size, weight, power, cost) trade-offs
