Data Scientist
Are you a hands-on Data Scientist motivated by solving complex, real-world optimization problems? At TORM, you will use maritime and market data to develop algorithms and decision-support solutions that improve market intelligence, fleet positioning and voyage planning.
At TORM, our commercial, operational, and technology teams work closely together to improve how we understand markets and operate our fleet.
As a Data Scientist, you'll take predictive and optimization models from development through to production, working with large-scale datasets covering vessels, voyages, weather, and markets.
Your main focus will be two connected areas: market intelligence (where models support freight-market forecasting and fleet-positioning decisions) and route optimization (where algorithms help identify realistic, risk-aware, and cost-efficient voyage alternatives).
You will own the work from problem framing and data exploration through modelling, validation, deployment, monitoring and communication of results.
Your Role
- Develop optimization, forecasting, and simulation models to support voyage planning, market intelligence, and commercial decision-making.
- Apply operations research, machine learning, statistical modelling, and graph algorithms to solve maritime business challenges.
- Work with large-scale structured and time-series datasets, including AIS, vessel, voyage, cargo, weather, bunker, and market data.
- Translate business needs into analytical solutions with clear objectives, assumptions, and success criteria.
- Build scalable Python-based solutions, pipelines, and APIs, and help move models into production.
- Validate and improve models using testing, back-testing, and business performance measures.
- Partner closely with business and technology teams to create practical decision-support tools.
- Identify new opportunities to drive value through data, AI, and optimization.
Your Profile
We are looking for a builder who combines mathematical depth with pragmatic problem-solving. You enjoy translating ambiguous business challenges into models that can be tested, trusted, and used in day-to-day decisions.
To do well in this role, you bring:
- A degree in quantitative fields such as Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, or similar.
- Around 2-3 years of professional experience in AI/ML, data, or software engineering, with recent hands-on predictive and optimization project experience
- Strong Python and SQL skills, writing clean, maintainable, and tested code
- Experience with probabilistic modelling, forecasting, mathematical optimization, machine learning, or similar analytical methods.
- Experience turning ideas and prototypes into solutions that people actually use.
- Ability to explain technical topics in a simple and practical way.
- Fluent in English.
It is a plus if you have experience with:
- Databricks, Spark, MLflow, Azure, or similar platforms.
- Optimization tools such as OR-Tools, Pyomo, Gurobi, or CPLEX.
- Logistics, routing, scheduling, geospatial data, or network analysis.
- Building dashboards, APIs, or decision-support tools.
- Shipping, logistics, transportation, commodity, or energy markets.
