Thomson Reuters is hiring a motivated and commercially minded legal counsel, based in Barcelona, to support Reuters' global business. This role will partner closely with Go-to-Market, Finance, Product and other Reuters business functions to support Reuters' business objectives.
The position will be based in Barcelona, Spain. It is a hybrid role split between office and remote work in accordance with the Company's Flexible Work Policy (3 days in office, 2 remote). The role will support Reuters business globally and is an exciting opportunity to support a growing global news business in this growing and key location.
About the Role
In this opportunity as Senior Legal Counsel you will:
Responsibilities
- Review, structure and negotiate commercial agreements based on the operational needs of the business (e.g., sales, product, technology, finance, content licensing partnership, events, SaaS, digital advertising and sponsorship)
- Provide general in-house commercial legal support to the Reuters business and operational units globally.
- Counsel and educate the Go-to-Market teams on contracting best practice, negotiation strategies and risk management to empower better and more effective decision-making
- Analyze, interpret and advise on a variety of key contractual matters, offering practical and concise solutions to support issue resolution relating to third party partners, advance business objectives and help balance risk and reward
- Partner with Reuters and Thomson Reuters lawyers around the world to ensure business compliance with privacy, data security and other IP and regulatory standards
- Safeguard the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles, which uphold Reuters' integrity, independence and freedom from bias.
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Senior Legal Counsel if you have the following required qualifications:
Requirements
- Fluency in English.
- JD/Law degree from an accredited law school and member of local bar in good standing and licensed to practice law in Spain
- Minimum of eight (8) years’ experience as a practicing lawyer, w ith in-house experience strongly preferred.
- Significant transactional experience in drafting and negotiating major content licensing, distribution and other complex commercial agreements, with strong understanding of copyright and intellectual property laws
- Must possess strong work ethic and work effectively in a fast-paced environment under tight timelines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to build relationship and collaborate with cross-functional teams
- A solutions-oriented self-starter who independently manages complex matters, anticipates legal and business risks, engages stakeholders proactively and drives initiatives end-to-end with minimal supervision.
- Ability to convey complex legal concepts and considerations in a concise, easy to understand manner.
Desirable AI-Related Skills & Experience
- Familiarity with the legal and regulatory landscape governing AI, including the EU AI Act, and the ability to spot AI-related risk in commercial and licensing agreements.
- Experience reviewing or negotiating contracts involving AI-related products, tools, and features as part of vendor due diligence, e.g., content/licensing agreements addressing AI training and use rights for news and editorial content; SaaS agreements with embedded AI functionality.
- Experience working with Privacy and Product Legal to advise business stakeholders on AI-related compliance questions and data governance touchpoints in a practical, risk-balanced way.
- Comfort using AI-powered legal tools (e.g., contract review and redlining platforms, AI drafting assistants) as part of day-to-day legal work, with an interest in helping the team adopt legal technology effectively.
- Interest in AI's growing role in legal operations and negotiation workflows, and willingness to contribute to playbooks, templates, or process improvements that leverage legal technology and AI tools.
