The University of Vienna invites outstanding candidates to apply for a doctoral position at the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS) as part of its Autumn Call 2026.

The Doctoral School VISESS at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy of the University of Vienna addresses current societal challenges through inter- and transdisciplinary academic research spanning the COSMOS, planet EARTH, its ENVIRONMENT and the ANTHROPOSPHERE. We aim for our students to become world-leading experts in their fields while confidently communicating and contributing across disciplines.
The Doctoral School is currently inviting applications for a doctoral position at the Faculty in the following field: Palaeontology.

Your future tasks:
Participation in research projects/research studies, as well as conducting independent research related to your dissertation. We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within the first 12 months.
Dissemination of project results through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at international conferences
Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
Supervision of students
Contribution to the organization of meetings, conferences, symposia
Involvement in organizational tasks related to research, teaching, and administration
(Further) development of strong communication, data presentation, and visualization skills
(Further) development of the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
You become an active member of your working group and the VISESS Doctoral School.
This is part of your personality:
You can apply if you are a highly qualified graduate who:
has completed a Diploma or Master’s degree in the/a field represented in the current call by the participating doctoral schools (in this case VISESS) or a closely related discipline;
demonstrates a strong interest in academic research and in pursuing a PhD at the University of Vienna;
meets the doctoral admission requirements of the University of Vienna by the start of employment;
has basic experience in academic writing, as well as subject-specific knowledge, methodological expertise, and skills as outlined for the specific position on the call website;
has an excellent command of written and spoken English.
