The position is formally based at Clinical Geriatrics, Uppsala University. The work will be conducted within a defined clinical research project combining clinical geriatrics, immunology and microbiome research. Laboratory work will be carried out at the Department of Molecular Geriatrics at the Rudbeck Laboratory, providing access to modern wet lab facilities in a well-functioning and collegial research environment. The project is part of an interdisciplinary research collaboration with established expertise in immunology and flow cytometry, and includes close interaction with the BioVis core facility. The position offers hands-on experience in high-quality laboratory work and data analysis in an interdisciplinary research setting.
Duties
The position involves laboratory and data-oriented work within an ongoing clinical research project. The work includes careful handling of fresh and frozen human biological samples, isolation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and DNA using sterile laboratory procedures and performing established laboratory assays and PCR-based analyses. The role also includes coordination of sample logistics in collaboration with clinical partners and external research infrastructures.
Multiparameter flow cytometry experiments are carried out in collaboration with the BioVis core facility. The work includes hands-on experimental activities, data quality control, gating and analysis, as well as structuring of flow cytometry data for integration with existing datasets. The position also involves documentation and reporting of results.
Requirements
Formal competence
- Master’s degree in immunology, biomedical sciences, molecular biology or a related field
Professional competence
- Documented experience with laboratory work with human biological samples
- Experience with sterile laboratory work
- Experience with PBMC isolation
- Experience with flow cytometry, including multiparameter panels and gating
- Experience with DNA isolation
- Experience with PCR-based laboratory methods
- Experience with basic data handling and analysis, preferably using R
Personal abilities
- Ability to plan, execute and document laboratory work in a structured manner with high accuracy and reproducibility
- Ability to work independently and take responsibility for laboratory workflows
- Structured, careful and quality-oriented working approach
- Ability to collaborate with researchers, clinicians and external partners
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English
Additional qualifications
- Experience from clinically oriented or translational research projects
- Experience with coordination of sample logistics and collaboration with external research infrastructures (e.g. sequencing facilities)
- Experience with complex, multi-step laboratory protocols
- Experience with structured data handling and documentation to support reproducible research
- Prior contribution to scientific reports or manuscripts
About the employment
The employment is a temporary position, 6 months. Scope of employment full-time. Starting date 23 September 2026 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
