Main function and scope:
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with proven experience in distributed software systems, systems integration and networked architectures for robotics or complex embedded platforms. The successful candidate will join multidisciplinary R&D projects involving robotic systems, advanced sensing technologies and high-level software infrastructures operating in technically demanding environments.
This role is focused on enabling robust communication and interoperability between robotic platforms, embedded subsystems and higher-level control or mission systems. The candidate will contribute to the design, development and validation of scalable software solutions in projects with high technical uncertainty, ambitious performance targets and strong applied research components.
Core Functions:
- Design and develop software architectures that connect robotic systems with network infrastructures and higher-level services.
- Define and implement communication interfaces between embedded devices, robotic platforms, edge computing systems, multimodal sensors and remote applications.
- Develop middleware, APIs and integration layers for distributed and heterogeneous systems.
- Contribute to the design of reliable, maintainable and scalable software frameworks for operational environments.
- Integrate networking, telemetry, command and control, data exchange and monitoring capabilities into robotic or cyber-physical systems.
- Analyse system-level requirements and translate them into robust software designs and implementation plans.
- Identify integration risks, diagnose complex failures and propose corrective actions across interfaces and subsystems.
- Participate in software validation, performance evaluation and deployment activities.
- Collaborate in the technical planning of multidisciplinary projects with software, electronics, control, mechanical and systems engineering teams.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of development practices, software quality and architectural consistency.
Required experience and candidate profile:
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering or similar.
- Senior-level experience in software development for distributed systems, robotics, embedded platforms or industrial/mission-critical applications.
- Strong experience in systems integration, network communications and software architecture design.
· Solid programming skills in C++ and Python, with the ability to develop production-quality software.· Experience with communication protocols, inter-process communication, service-oriented architectures or middleware technologies.
- Experience integrating software across heterogeneous environments, including embedded devices, Linux-based systems and higher-level applications.
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles, modular design, testing and maintainability.
- Experience with cybersecurity considerations in connected systems
- Ability to work with evolving requirements and high levels of technical uncertainty.
- Fluent English, both written and spoken.
- Willingness to relocate to the Canary Islands or Madrid (Torrejón).
- Eagerness to learn completely new technologies and contribute beyond a narrowly defined role.
Any relevant experience related to the following is a plus:
- Experience with robotic middleware such as ROS/ROS 2 or similar distributed frameworks.
- Experience with real-time or near-real-time systems.
- Knowledge of networked robotic systems, remote operation, telemetry or command-and-control environments.
- Familiarity with containerised deployments, virtualisation or edge/cloud integration.
- Background in defence, aerospace, industrial automation or other highly demanding technology environments.
- Experience working in applied research or early-stage technology development projects.
- Familiarity with software deployment, observability, diagnostics and lifecycle management in operational systems.
This position can be based either at Avenida Premios Nobel 51, Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), or at the Nanotec Building, San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife).
