The department operates at Campus Sundsvall and Campus Östersund. It provides education and conducts research in pedagogy, psychology, and social work.
Job description
The research project is at the intersection of social psychology and sociolinguistics, examining how accents function as social signals. The focus is on social perception, attitudes, emotions, and behaviours related to foreign accents.
The research addresses questions of stereotypes, discrimination, and social inclusion from a Swedish and international perspective, with a consistent gender perspective throughout. The project is interdisciplinary and connects to work and organisational psychology, political science, gender studies, and research on integration and belonging.
Methodologically, the project is primarily based on experimental studies and psychometric approaches, with the possibility of applying neuroscientific methods as well.
The position is within the Department of Psychology, which is characterised by a close and personal environment with strong collegial support. The doctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research environment and will work in close collaboration with supervisors, with considerable emphasis on developing independence in planning, implementation, and scientific communication. In the later stages of the dissertation, the doctoral student may have the possibility to design their own sub-study within the project's overarching themes.
The position involves doctoral studies, comprising research (80%) and teaching and administrative work (20%). The primary duties consist of conducting supervised research leading to a doctoral dissertation. The position also includes completing 60 higher education credits in doctoral courses, as well as participating in seminars and other activities within the subject area and the department.
Entry requirements
General entry requirements include a second-cycle level qualification, or fulfilment of courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits must be at second-cycle level, or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad. Specific entry requirements include at least 90 credits in the subject of psychology or the equivalent knowledge gained in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Other Requirements
Strong English skills, both spoken and written, are required. Good knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language (Norwegian or Danish) is an asset.
The applicant must be driven and independent, analytical, initiative-taking, collaborative, development-oriented, and persistent.
Higher education at the advanced level in psychology, as well as prior experience in the project's research area, are assets for the position. Experience in developing or validating psychometric tools, working with EEG/ERP or other neuroscientific methods, and knowledge of tools such as R, MATLAB, or Python are also considered assets. A scientific publication or manuscript in progress may be considered an asset, particularly if it relates to the project's research area.
Assessment criteria
Selection among eligible applicants is made on the basis of an overall assessment of the applicant's ability to successfully complete a doctoral education. The assessment will place particular emphasis on the scientific quality of independent degree projects, the project plan submitted with the application, the applicant's personal qualities, and the applicant’s understanding of and interest in the project's research area.
Employment process
Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen, SFS 1993:100) and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures.
Terms of employment
The doctoral position corresponds to five years of employment and is expected to lead to a doctoral degree. In addition to doctoral studies, which comprise 80% of the full-time position, teaching and administrative work will make up the remaining 20%, making it equivalent to a full-time post. If the pace of study in doctoral education changes, the employment period will be adjusted accordingly.
Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
