Student Assistants (SHK) in Intelligent Networked Systems and Services
The Institute of Networked Energy-Efficient Systems is dedicated to advancing autonomous, energy-efficient cloud-based networks that support cutting-edge services and innovations. We are assembling a talented international team committed to pioneering research and teaching in this dynamic field.
Are you interested in 6G and future mobile networks, AI, autonomous vehicles, video streaming, edge/cloud computing, or robotics? Would you like to go beyond simulations and coursework and work with real experimental systems? We are looking for up to two motivated student assistants (Studentische Hilfskräfte) to join our team and help us build, operate, and extend experimental platforms for research on future communication networks and intelligent networked systems.
Scope: part-time
Duration: fixed-term, 1 Jahr
Start: at the earliest possible date
Apply by: 2026-09-22
Your tasks:
- Remote-controlled racing cars over mobile networks: building experimental setups for controlling vehicles remotely while investigating latency, reliability, and network performance.
- Autonomous racing cars: integrating sensors, control algorithms, AI, and communication technologies for autonomous driving experiments.
- Video streaming over 5G/6G networks: setting up and evaluating live and on-demand video streaming under different network conditions.
- AI/LLM-based video processing: experimenting with AI, computer vision, and multimodal/large language models for intelligent analysis and processing of video streams.
- Edge and cloud computing: deploying applications across devices, edge servers, and cloud infrastructure and investigating where computation should take place.
- Network experimentation: configuring experimental networks, collecting measurements, automating experiments, and analysing network and application performance.
- Demonstrators and prototypes: helping turn research ideas into working systems that can be demonstrated at research events, project meetings, and conferences.
Your profile:
You should be enrolled in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related programme at Ruhr University Bochum or another German university. Experience in one or more of the following would be helpful:
- Python, C/C++, JavaScript, or similar programming languages
- Linux and networking
- Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, Arduino, or other embedded platforms
- Robotics, autonomous systems, or ROS/ROS2
- Computer vision and video processing
- AI, machine learning, LLMs, or multimodal AI
- 5G/6G, Wi-Fi, or software-defined networking
- Docker, Kubernetes, edge/cloud computing
- Video streaming technologies
- Sensors, cameras, electronics, or hardware prototyping
We offer:
- You will work directly with researchers at the Institute of Networked Energy-Efficient Systems on experimental research related to future communication networks, AI, cloud/edge computing, autonomous systems, and emerging 6G applications.
- Hands-on experience with real research platforms and experimental systems
- The opportunity to learn technologies beyond the standard university curriculum
- Flexible working hours compatible with your studies
- Close interaction with researchers in an international research environment
- Opportunities to develop your own ideas and take increasing responsibility
- Potential topics for future Bachelor's or Master's theses
- The possibility of contributing to research demonstrators, publications, and national and international research projects

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum stands for diversity and equal opportunities. For this reason, we favour a working environment composed of heterogeneous teams, and seek to promote the careers of individuals who are underrepresented in our respective professional areas. The Ruhr-Universität Bochum expressly requests job applications from women. In areas in which they are underrepresented they will be given preference in the case of equivalent qualifications with male candidates. Applications from individuals with disabilities are most welcome.
