Karolinska Institutet invites applications for an outstanding Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to several projects on fluid biomarkers and integration with neuroimaging and clinical measurements in in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB).
The Research Group
The postdoctoral position is based at the Division of Clinical Geriatrics, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS), within the research group led by Dr. Daniel Ferreira, located at KI Campus Flemingsberg. The group works extensively on various biomarkers, including CSF and blood-based fluid biomarkers, as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), applied to aging and neurodegenerative disorders.
Your role
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be involved in leading DLB projects within local, national and international collaborations. This project aims to advance our understanding of how proteinopathies drive brain degeneration, disease progression and other related processes such as inflammation and synaptic dysfunction in DLB, using state-of-the-art fluid and neuroimaging biomarkers. You will primarily utilize and analyze biofluid biomarker datasets (including core markers and proteomics), with opportunities for targeted laboratory involvement in assay optimization and implementation (for example, alpha-synuclein Seed Amplification Assays). Additionally, you will integrate these molecular findings with neuroimaging techniques to investigate structural and metabolic markers of neurodegeneration, including cortical thickness, brain volumes, and hypometabolism.
A key responsibility will be to harmonize biomarker data from multiple centers, to build and maintain research databases and to manage the biosample repository and fluid biomarker analyses for local clinical cohorts. You will also contribute to coordinating studies within the Research Group where doctoral students and master students are involved. Another key responsibility is to work towards the setup and optimization of seeding amplification assays together with collaborating laboratories.
The postdoctoral researcher will work independently on their own project while collaborating closely with the group leader, members of the research group, and other collaborators at Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska Hospital and international. You will be expected to independently apply for research funding and grants, develop your research profile and projects, and contribute to seminars and journal clubs within the division. There will also be opportunities to teach at the advanced level and to supervise students.
Qualifications
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
We are seeking a motivated, creative, and independent researcher with a PhD in biochemistry, biology, neuroscience, or medicine. The ideal candidate will have experience in research on fluid biomarkers in aging and/or neurodegenerative diseases. Experience in neuroimaging, including MRI and FDG-PET in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), is considered a merit.
The successful candidate should have documented experience in harmonizing multicenter datasets, as well as establishing, managing, and coordinating clinical cohort databases and biobank resources. Applicants are expected to have a strong scientific background in fluid biomarker research related to neurodegenerative diseases, including handling and processing human samples such as plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, developing and implementing biomarker assays, and analyzing and interpreting molecular data. Experience with both established biomarkers and discovery-driven approaches, such as proteomics and other high-throughput platforms, is essential. Experience in studying the biological mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration is also required. Experience in integrating fluid biomarkers and neuroimaging data in multimodal research studies is considered an advantage.
The applicant should have strong skills in statistical data analysis. Experience with international research collaborations and participation in multinational research consortia is considered a strong merit.
The position requires a researcher who can independently formulate scientific research questions, lead research projects, and publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals. A documented track record of scientific publications is required, and experience in securing external research funding is particularly desirable. The role also requires excellent collaboration skills and a high level of proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
