Sustainability, Wellness and Out of the Ordinary experiences are at the core of everything we do at Six Senses. I will safeguard these pillars and its strategic planning and development and ensure all directives, practices and initiatives are implemented, embraced, adopted within the hotel.
Duties and Responsibilities
As Director of Engineering, I will assume full responsibility for the efficient operation of the Engineering department including landscape and gardening, plant and equipment, technical work, carpentry, sustainability, fire and safety systems and a preventative maintenance program to provide exceptional products and services within brand operating standards.
The duties and responsibilities will include:
- Lead the pre-opening engineering strategy, ensuring that all technical systems, plant, equipment, facilities and infrastructure are inspected, tested, commissioned and fully operational prior to opening.
- Develop and implement comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance programs to ensure the property remains in optimal condition and all equipment operates safely, efficiently and reliably.
- Continually improve engineering and maintenance practices in line with Six Senses operating standards, wellness principles and sustainability commitments.
- Establish and maintain effective systems for the management of energy, water, waste and other environmental resources, identifying opportunities to reduce consumption, improve efficiency and minimize the property's environmental footprint.
- Ensure the property complies with all applicable legal, statutory, environmental, fire, health and safety requirements, maintaining all required permits, inspections, certifications, records and documentation.
- Take ownership of all fire and life-safety systems, ensuring regular testing, preventive maintenance, compliance and coordination with the relevant authorities and external specialists.
- Ensure that all engineering-related systems support the hotel's wellness proposition, guest comfort and the seamless delivery of the Six Senses guest experience.
- Ensure adequate departmental manning, rostering and resource planning, while organizing and supervising external contractors and specialist suppliers whenever required.
- Recruit, train, coach and develop the Engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, technical excellence, sustainability, safety and continuous improvement.
- Instill a strong cost-conscious philosophy through training, education and effective management of energy, materials, spare parts, contracts and external services.
- Prepare and manage the Engineering department's annual budget, capital expenditure and operating expenditure, ensuring expenditure remains within approved financial parameters.
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization, energy efficiency and return on investment, while protecting the quality and long-term value of the property.
- Provide the technical expertise required to analyze, design and implement engineering projects, conduct investigations and evaluate engineering products, systems and services relevant to the resort.
- Oversee all contractors, consultants and service providers, ensuring work is delivered safely, on time, within budget and in accordance with Six Senses standards.
- Establish robust systems for asset management, maintenance records, warranties, technical documentation and equipment inventories, ensuring all information is accurate and up to date.
- Work closely with the General Manager, Finance, Rooms, Culinary, Spa, Sustainability and other operational departments to ensure engineering supports the overall business strategy and guest experience.
- Ensure all engineering systems and operational procedures are fully handed over, documented and understood by the Engineering team before opening.
- Develop and implement appropriate emergency response, business continuity and crisis management procedures related to engineering, utilities, fire, safety and critical infrastructure.
- Monitor key engineering performance indicators and provide regular reporting to the General Manager and relevant stakeholders, highlighting risks, opportunities, performance and corrective actions.
- Establish and deliver agreed financial returns related to revenue generation, profitability and ROIC, where applicable to Engineering-led initiatives and capital investments.
- Operate the property consistently with all legal, statutory and financial requirements, ensuring that reporting systems, contractual obligations, security and safety protocols, communication standards, product and service standards, Host management practices and budgetary controls are implemented, reviewed and maintained.
- Ensure that the Engineering department consistently contributes to an Out of the Ordinary guest and Host experience, combining technical excellence with the unique character and sustainability vision of Six Senses.
- Continually focus on improving maintenance and engineering practices to ensure the product remains in optimal order and in line with Six Senses wellness and sustainability practices.
- Ensure that rostering and manning are adequate to meet the requirements, plus organize external contractors as required.
- Instill a cost-focused philosophy through training and education.
- Technical skills that include the ability to analyze and design projects, conduct investigations and maintaining full knowledge of engineering-related products and services used in resorts.
- Establish and deliver pre-established financial returns related to revenue generation, profitability and ROIC.
Qualifications
To execute the position of Director of Engineering, I must have the required qualifications, technical skills and experience in a similar role in luxury hotels with proven results and includes the following:
- Possess some college or advanced vocational training and six years of experience in general building maintenance and/or construction and supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, in either Mechanical or Electrical disciplines, and more than ten years’ experience in a similar hotel engineering role, preferred.
- Professional certification and license if required by law.
- Specialized expertise in plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry fields. Level 3 EPA Certification, HVAC and refrigeration certificate, licensed plumber and/or journeyman status for electrician and carpenter may be required.
- Fluent in English and Spansih.
- A valid work permit/visa and legal right to work in Spain is required.
