What if your frontend work didn't just impact one application, but helped shape how engineers across ING build, test and deploy frontend applications?
For ING, we are looking for an experienced Senior Frontend Engineer to join SuperHighway, a specialised engineering team within ING's Frontend Foundation Web domain.
This is not a traditional frontend development role focused primarily on building screens or implementing features. ING is looking for an engineer at heart: someone who understands JavaScript and TypeScript beyond the framework level, enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and can explain the technical reasoning behind architectural decisions.
And there is another important dimension to the role: AI.
The team is exploring how AI agents can become an integral part of the frontend engineering lifecycle. You don't need to be an AI specialist already, but you should be genuinely curious about AI and excited about building AI-powered solutions rather than simply using tools such as Copilot.
The environment
ING's One Experience product area builds technology that enables engineers across the organisation to create scalable digital experiences.
The area owns several important products, including:
- the Unified Design System
- Frontend Foundation Web
- Content Management as a Service
- the Global Frontend Pipelines
Within this environment, the SuperHighway squad consists of six engineers responsible for core frontend libraries, components and engineering tooling used throughout ING's frontend ecosystem.
The team maintains solutions such as a custom router and mock server kit and operates the Global Frontend Pipelines, built as deployment-as-code solutions supporting ING's Micro-Frontend architecture.
Your work therefore reaches far beyond a single application or squad.
Your challenge
One of the team's biggest challenges is defining how AI can fundamentally improve the frontend development flow.
The ambition isn't simply to give engineers another AI assistant. The team wants to explore and build AI agents capable of performing specific engineering tasks and determine how these solutions can be integrated safely and sustainably into ING's frontend ecosystem.
You will combine this challenge with hands-on frontend engineering and platform responsibilities.
You will:
- help design and build AI-powered engineering solutions and AI agents
- contribute to ING's frontend architecture and engineering standards
- develop and maintain core frontend libraries and components
- work extensively with JavaScript and TypeScript
- contribute to frontend build tooling and the Node.js ecosystem
- improve CI/CD and deployment-as-code solutions
- support scalable deployments within a Micro-Frontend architecture
- work with Web Components and modern frontend architecture patterns
- contribute to release procedures, security and technical risk evaluation
- challenge technical decisions and propose better solutions where appropriate share your knowledge and help other engineers succeed
Requirements
What makes you a strong match?
We are looking for someone who doesn't just know how to make something work, but wants to understand why one technical approach is better than another.
For example, you should be comfortable discussing when and why TypeScript provides advantages over JavaScript, rather than simply saying that you have worked with both.
You bring:
- 10+ years of experience in software development/engineering, preferably within Agile environments
- deep knowledge of JavaScript and TypeScript, including the fundamentals of how JavaScript works
- strong experience with the Node.js ecosystem
- knowledge of Web Components
- experience with frontend build tooling such as Webpack and/or Rollup
- experience with CI/CD, preferably Azure DevOps
- understanding of deployment and release processes, including CDN deployments, risk and security considerations
- knowledge of frontend architecture and design patterns such as SPA, SSR and SSG, ideally including Next.js
- experience with TDD/BDD and automated testing
- familiarity with testing tools such as Mocha, Chai, Selenium, Karma or comparable technologies
- strong technical communication skills and the ability to explain and defend engineering decisions
- excellent command of English
And what about AI?
You don't need years of professional AI engineering experience.
What matters is that your interest goes beyond using AI tools.
Perhaps you have already experimented with agents, LLM-powered workflows or AI integrations. Maybe you have built something yourself. Or perhaps you have a strong engineering foundation and are eager to move seriously into this field.
What ING is looking for is curiosity, technical depth and a steep learning curve: someone who wants to understand how AI agents work and how they can be used to solve real engineering problems.
Benefits
Why this role?
This is an opportunity for a senior engineer who wants more than another frontend feature-development assignment.
You will work on technology that supports engineers across ING, contribute to architectural decisions and help explore what an AI-enabled frontend engineering environment should look like.
If you enjoy going deep into JavaScript and TypeScript, discussing architecture with other experienced engineers and experimenting with how AI can change software engineering, this could be a very interesting next step.
What we offer
Ready to use your frontend engineering expertise to help shape how AI becomes part of the development experience at ING?
Here’s what you can expect:
- A contract until 30 April 2027, with the possibility of extension.
- A 36-hour working week.
- A salary range of € 5.177,70 - € 5.943,54 gross per month, based on 36 hours per week and depending on experience.
- Additional benefits, including holiday allowance, a 13th-month payment, and pension contribution.
Please note: This position is only open to candidates who are currently based in the Netherlands.
