Your mission
As a Senior Network Engineer focused on the physical and link layer, you will own the radio and MAC-layer software that keeps autonomous nodes connected across links that range from narrowband to broadband and from short-range to long-range, under contested and electromagnetically hostile conditions.
You will program software-defined radios and optical terminals as runtime-configurable assets, tune waveform parameters and modulation-and-coding schemes to fit the link budget at hand, and build deterministic, collision-free media access control for links that must hold together under jamming and interference.
Your work determines whether a link survives fading and jamming, and whether a new one can form fast enough to keep pace with rapid topology change. It is the physical foundation the mesh and routing layer is built on.
Your profile
- Master's degree or PhD in Electrical/Communications Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in RF, radio layer or embedded network engineering.
- Proficient in C, C++ or Rust for bare-metal or RTOS environments (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, RIOT) and Linux-embedded systems.
- Experience with software-defined radio architectures, digital modulation schemes and MAC layer protocol design.
- Practical knowledge of TDMA scheduling and anti-jamming techniques such as frequency hopping (FHSS).
- Strong analytical and systems engineering mindset.
- Excellent communication skills in English; German language skills are a plus.
Nice to Have* Domain knowledge in cognitive radio, electromagnetic warfare countermeasures or tactical wireless mesh systems.
- Link design across the range and bandwidth spectrum, from long-range narrowband telemetry to high-throughput broadband links, such as point-to-point microwave, mmWave or optical inter-satellite links.
- Fine-steering mirror or laser-terminal control for optical links.
- Network simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing (ns-3, SDR-in-the-loop test rigs).
- Familiarity with IETF, IEEE or NATO STANAG communication standards, particularly tactical radio and data-link standards used in defense or dual-use contexts.
