The Mannheim Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University is seeking a candidate for the Department of Vascular Dysfunction for a 1.5-year full-time research project with a fixed-term contract through March 2028:

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

The project builds on our recent study, Drekolia et al., Cell Metabolism (2026), which identified an amino acid-dependent metabolic–epigenetic pathway linking cystine metabolism to chromatin regulation, endothelial proliferation and vascular repair. The successful candidate will investigate how amino acids and their metabolic products regulate endothelial cell fate, regeneration and adaptation to vascular injury and ageing.

Your tasks:

  • Independently planning, conducting and analysing a research project investigating the role of amino acid metabolism in endothelial regeneration and vascular injury responses
  • Identifying metabolic, epigenetic and transcriptional mechanisms through which amino acids regulate endothelial cell function, proliferation and regenerative capacity
  • Applying state-of-the-art methodologies, including stable isotope tracing, mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, transcriptomic and epigenomic analyses, high-resolution imaging and flow cytometry
  • Performing functional experiments using primary human and murine endothelial cells, as well as ex vivo and in vivo models of angiogenesis, vascular injury, regeneration and ageing
  • Presenting the results at national and international conferences and publishing them in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Your profile:

  • A completed PhD in biology, biochemistry, molecular medicine, biomedical sciences or a related discipline
  • Practical experience in at least one of the following areas: metabolomics, stable isotope tracing, omics technologies, primary endothelial cell culture, advanced microscopy, flow cytometry or bioinformatic data analysis
  • A scientific background in vascular biology, cellular metabolism, epigenetics, regeneration or a related field is highly desirable
  • Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of German is advantageous but not required
  • Experience with experimental animal models and an appropriate laboratory animal science qualification is desirable; alternatively, willingness to obtain the required qualification is expected
