Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 46 000 students and 8 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Work duties
As a Project Assistant, you will contribute to a research project focused on the development of harmonized and reproducible analysis workflows for biological small-angle X-ray scattering (BioSAXS). The work involves the analysis and comparison of experimental data obtained from laboratory-based SAXS instrumentation and synchrotron facilities.
Your duties will include, but are not limited to:
- participating in the planning and execution of solution scattering experiments at Lund University and at national and international research infrastructures, including MAX IV and ESRF. The position may involve travel in connection with experimental campaigns. Travel to neutron facilities, such as ESS and the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), may also be required.
- processing, quality-assessing, and analyzing experimental SAXS data using established analysis software and Python-based tools.
- developing and documenting reproducible analysis workflows in Python and Jupyter.
- performing comparative analyses of data collected at different instruments and research facilities to identify systematic differences and contribute to the development of harmonized analysis methodologies.
- contributing to the development of recommendations for quality control, data analysis, and data visualization.
- contributing to project documentation, training materials, and user support.
- collaborating with researchers and experts at Lund University and national and international research infrastructures.
The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the project research team and international partners, providing an opportunity to contribute to the development of future methodologies for integrated analysis of solution scattering data from both X-ray and neutron-based research facilities.
Qualifications
- A Master's degree in chemistry, physics, biophysics, structural biology, biotechnology, or another closely related field in the natural sciences.
- Proficiency in Python or another relevant programming language for scientific data analysis.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively as part of a team and independently in a structured and organized manner.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, document, and execute tasks in a structured and meticulous manner.
Other merits
- Experience with small-angle scattering techniques (SAXS and/or SANS).
- Experience in the analysis of biological scattering data.
- Experience with Python-based data analysis environments, such as Jupyter Notebook.
- Experience working at synchrotron and/or neutron facilities.
- Experience in scientific programming and the development of reproducible computational analysis workflows.
- Experience in documentation, user support, and/or the development of training materials.
- An interest in the development of research infrastructures and interdisciplinary collaborations.
We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will also be given good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the administrative work within the unit/department, as well as contribute to its future development.
