Operating Engineer - Automation, SCADA & OT Systems [EU-Resident]
TenneT · Arnhem, Netherlands
Apply directly with the employer or job board. Applications are never handled here.
As an Operating Engineer - Automation, SCADA & OT Systems within Operational Readiness Engineering - Offshore Netherlands, you help ensure that the automation and OT systems supporting our offshore auxiliary systems are ready to be safely and reliably operated and maintained after handover to Operations.
Based in Arnhem, you bring the future O&M perspective into projects during engineering, integration, commissioning and handover. You do not own the detailed design; instead, you review and challenge technical solutions to ensure they are operable, maintainable, supportable and secure throughout their lifecycle.
An important part of Operational Readiness is also to capture, structure and retain critical technical knowledge from projects, contractors and vendors, ensuring that TenneT has the internal expertise required after handover.
Your profile and background
A practical O&M mindset is just as important as technical knowledge. We are looking for someone who understands automation and OT systems, sees how technology and infrastructure interact and is confident enough to challenge a solution when it could work better for Operations.
You bring:
- A Msc.or Bsc. level in Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electronics, Computer Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Relevant experience with industrial automation, SCADA, DCS, PLC or OT systems.
- Practical understanding of automation architectures, industrial communication and control-system interfaces.
- Knowledge of OT infrastructure such as networks, servers, virtualisation, firewalls and remote access.
- Experience reviewing control philosophies, functional descriptions, network architectures and vendor documentation.
- Understanding of diagnostics, redundancy, backup, recovery and lifecycle management.
- Awareness of industrial cybersecurity principles, preferably including IEC 62443.
- Experience working with contractors, vendors and multidisciplinary engineering teams;
- A structured and pragmatic way of working and the confidence to challenge technical solutions constructively.
- Strong English communication skills. Dutch is an advantage.
Experience in Operations & Maintenance, commissioning, control-system support, field engineering or asset support fits particularly well. A background in offshore platforms, offshore wind, maritime, oil & gas, process industry or other complex integrated installations is also relevant.
Your contribution to TenneT
How will you help power the Netherlands? By making sure the automation, SCADA and OT systems supporting our offshore assets are ready to be operated and maintained safely, reliably and securely for years to come.
Within Operational Readiness, the Operating Engineer connects Project Delivery, Engineering and the future Operations organisation. The focus is not on owning the detailed design, but on reviewing and challenging solutions from an O&M perspective.
Your responsibilities include:
- Represent the future Operations organisation by providing O&M input during engineering, testing, commissioning and handover.
- Review operability and maintainability of SCADA, automation and OT systems.
- Identify operational, lifecycle and cybersecurity risks and challenge technical solutions where required.
- Support maintenance concepts, lifecycle planning, backup and recovery strategies and service requirements.
- Safeguard documentation, configurations, software information and vendor knowledge before handover.
- Attend/review FAT, SAT and commissioning results from an Operations perspective.
- Capture lessons learned and translate operational experience into improvements for future projects.
The technical scope includes SCADA, DCS and PLC-based automation, HMI, historians, industrial servers, virtualised OT environments, OT networks, firewalls, secure remote access, backup and recovery, software lifecycle management and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC-UA and Profinet. Interfaces with systems such as HVAC, pumps, diesel generators, UPS and fire and safety systems are also part of the role.
The focus is specifically on automation, SCADA and OT technology supporting auxiliary systems. High Voltage systems, HV protection & control and HVDC converter control are outside the scope of this position.
Being a specialist in every technology is not required. A broad automation/OT background is more valuable: strong knowledge of industrial automation or SCADA, combined with enough breadth to understand OT infrastructure, cybersecurity and multidisciplinary interfaces.
