Description of the subject area
Medicalanthropology is an interdisciplinary field that examines how health and illness are experienced, understood, and shaped within different healthcare systems and in different geographical and cultural contexts. Using ethnographic methods and context-sensitive analysis, the field explores cultural norms, social relations, and power structures, and their influence on health-related behaviors, healthcare-seeking practices, and adherence to disease-preventive measures. Medical anthropology complements epidemiological and quantitative approaches by highlighting how health, illness, and healthcare practices are interpreted and experienced across diverse settings.
