Instructor for Employee Shop and Loan facilities – Willem de Kooning Academy

Do you see it as a challenge to help changing the former Trashbunker, shop and loan facilities into to new Material Hub? The central place where materials are shared, reused, and given a second life. Then we are looking for you.

What are you going to do?

The Trashbunker has grown far beyond being a place to find “free stuff.” It has become a powerful example of student-led sustainability, creative reuse, and community engagement. To ensure its long-term success and integration into the Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA), we are now transitioning toward a unified Material Hub.

As employee of the Material Hub, you support the implementation of the existing Material Hub plan and contribute to the day-to-day organisation and further development of the hub in collaboration with colleagues and students.

You work together with colleagues, students and external partners to support sustainable material use within the academy and support the transition. In doing so, you will actively contribute to a culture in which sustainable material use becomes second nature.

In addition, you will:

• Support the day-to-day operation and work in the shop and loan facilities;
• Contribute to the realisation of the Material Hub and facilitate and support students and colleagues to make use of sustainable material practices.

This is a position for 0,4 FTE. However, in September* we will possibly give a temporary extension of 0,4 FTE to cover parental leave within the team.

Willem de Kooning Academie

The Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) is a leading international academy for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in media, art, design, leisure and arts education.

The Material Hub

Within our education we see it as our responsibility to address the complexities of material practice within art and design education and aim to find ways to support responsible making practice.

With the realization of the Material Hub we aim to educate our students and staff. We should not ignore the ecological footprint of our making practice but address this by offering them a choice of extensive range materials which are consciously chosen and connected to the educational practice, informed by the expertise of our staff and connecting to local circular initiatives, which contributes awareness about the usage of materials.

You are an organised and strong communicator who easily connects with students, colleagues, and external partners. You are someone who works resourcefully and gains energy from finding creative solutions. At the same time, you are reliable and feel responsible for both your work and the people around you. In this way, you actively contribute to an inclusive and inspiring learning environment in which everyone feels seen and valued.

You also have:

• A bachelor’s degree (BA/MA Art/Design), with a strong interest and demonstrable affinity and /or work experience in sustainable, circular, and regenerative art/design practices;
• A passion for community building, and education;
• You have knowledge of materials, and you have demonstrable affinity or practical experience in the field of sustainable and circular manufacturing practices;
• Strong digital skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word;
• Spatial awareness and the ability to contribute to the organisation and layout of the Material Hub.

What do we offer?

• A one-year contract upon starting employment (D4 CAO HBO)
• Salary in scale 7: € 3.064,08 – € 4.084,93 gross per month (based on full-time employment, depending on experience and qualifications)

Location

You will be working at the Blaak/Wijnhaven location of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, which is easily accessible by public transport.
