Assignment Description
Our client is seeking a frontend developer for an assignment centered on building robust, reusable and well-documented components within a design system.
This role suits someone who cares about the finer details of component development — semantics, accessibility, API design, testability and documentation — and who enjoys working closely alongside design. You will join a small, focused team made up of developers, designers and UX writers/content designers.
You will work on implementing and evolving components using Lit and Web Components, ensuring high standards of accessibility, semantics, API design and usability. Part of the role involves documenting usage patterns, behaviors, guidelines and technical decisions, helping make components easy for other teams to understand, adopt and maintain.
You will collaborate closely with designers and UX writers/content designers, and contribute to improving the design system's workflows, component structure and internal communication. The role also includes supporting other teams on how to properly apply components and guidelines.
This is a temporary assignment covering parental leave within an existing design systems team, with an emphasis on maintaining continuity, quality and the ongoing development of current work.
Required Qualifications
- At least 3–5 years of experience in frontend development
- Strong knowledge of JavaScript and TypeScript
- Experience with component-based frontend development, ideally with React
- Hands-on experience with Web Components, ideally using Lit
- Experience building, maintaining or contributing to component libraries or design systems
- Foundational understanding of accessibility in frontend development, including WCAG principles, semantics and keyboard navigation
- Experience with version control and CI/CD workflows
- Comfortable collaborating closely with designers, UX writers/content designers and fellow developers
- Ability to clearly document components, guidelines and technical decisions
Meriting Experience
- In-depth, hands-on experience with accessible component development — WCAG review, ARIA, focus management and screen reader testing
- Experience designing and managing component APIs within Web Components, such as properties/attributes, events and slots
- Experience using or integrating Web Components within React applications
- Practical experience with Storybook or similar documentation and development tools
- Interest in or experience with automated testing of UI components
- Experience with design tokens, theming or CSS architecture
- Experience with monorepos, packaging and npm package version management
