Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

Amentum is seeking a Site Safety and Health Officer to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Site Safety and Health Officer is responsible for managing and enforcing the Contractor’s safety program and ensuring compliance with applicable safety regulations and requirements, including EM385-1-1, Section 1 and 29 CFR 1926.16. The SSHO will also administer the government accepted Accident Prevention Plan and provide onsite safety leadership for project operations.

Job Responsibilities:

• Serve as the onsite Site Safety and Health Officer responsible for implementing and administering the Contractor’s safety program and approved Accident Prevention Plan.
• Remain physically onsite whenever work is being performed to ensure safety requirements are consistently followed.
• Provide oversight and manage a team consisting of at least one Competent Person at each project site who is trained and qualified to function as an SSHO.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations under 29 CFR 1926.16, including site specific requirements.
• Ensure all safety protocols, programs, and best practices meet the standards established by EM 385-1-1, Section 1, and associated requirements.
• Complete the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety course or an equivalent program and maintain required safety and health training.
• Enforce safety requirements onsite and ensure compliance with safety protocols, procedures, an guidelines.
• Identify hazardous conditions and implement appropriate preventive and corrective measures.
• Provide regular safety training and guidance to workers and subcontractors regarding safety standards and requirements.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and verify compliance with the Contractor’s safety program.
• Promptly address safety discrepancies, violations, and unsafe conditions and implement corrective actions to prevent further risk.
• Prepare and submit safety records, incident reports, and performance related documentation in accordance with the Accident Prevention Plan.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience preparing and enforcing safety programs on contracts of similar size and complexity.
• Alternatively, three (3) years of experience may be accepted when accompanied by a Certified Safety Professional credential or a degree in safety and health.
• Successful completion of the OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety course or an equivalent safety training program.
• Compliance with OSHA training requirements, including 24 hours of formal safety and health coursework every four years.
• Comprehensive understanding of safety regulations, particularly EM 385 1-1, Section 1 and 29 CFR 1926.16 including associated safety requirements.
• Strong leadership and organizational skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
• Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
• Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
• Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
• Must read, speak, and comprehend English to the extent that they can perform the contract requirements and comply with installation emergency procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
• A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver’s license. and passport.
• Certified Safety Professional credential or a degree in safety and health.
• Experience creating and implementing comprehensive Accident Prevention Plans.

Working Environment

This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in offices, industrial warehouses, ports, airfields, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.

Physical Requirements

Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
