Join Vestas as a Specialist - Aeroelastic Modelling and lead the development of advanced simulation capabilities that drive critical engineering decisions across next-generation turbine platforms.
Work at the intersection of physics, software, and innovation to solve complex challenges and accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
Vestas Technology & Operations > Research & Development > Loads & Control (LaC) > LaC Modelling
Loads & Control (LaC) is responsible for designing and optimizing Vestas' wind turbine products with respect to structural loads, energy performance, and control strategies. As a key function within Vestas R&D, the department translates product and technology roadmaps into robust, scalable, and certifiable engineering solutions that support the entire product lifecycle.
Within LaC, LaC Modelling owns and develops the aero-servo-elastic simulation capabilities that serve as the foundation for critical engineering and design decisions across our turbine platforms. These capabilities support blade design, system integration, stability assessment, and product validation through advanced physical modelling, numerical simulation, and industrialized software solutions.
As turbine technologies continue to evolve in scale and complexity, we are expanding our modelling expertise and strengthening our technical leadership. We are now looking for a Specialist - Aeroelastic Modelling to act as the Subsystem Technical Owner for aeroelastic modelling capabilities.
In this role, you will be responsible for advancing and governing the modelling framework that enables accurate simulation, informed design decisions, and future-ready engineering solutions. You will combine deep expertise in physics, simulation methodologies, and software systems to shape a scalable, robust, and platform-ready capability that supports the next generation of wind turbine technology.
The expectation is to establish a more reproducible and scalable approach that reduces dependency on individual experts, improves alignment between validation outcomes and field or load-campaign evidence, and enables more predictable lead times for accepted AM services.
Responsibilities
As a Specialist - Aeroelastic Modelling, you will:
- Own the Aeroelastic Modelling capability as a governed service within the Simulation Production System, including canonical solver contracts, model-agnostic I/O schemas, validity boundaries, regression-test baselines, release criteria, and engineering evidence required for downstream loads, stability, surrogate, and certification workflows
- Act as the technical authority for modelling systems, ensuring the physical accuracy, numerical robustness, and engineering quality of simulation models and results
- Lead the evolution of aeroelastic solver technologies, improving performance, maintainability, scalability, and integration with emerging modelling needs
- Provide expert technical guidance and troubleshooting support across turbine modelling activities, enabling high-quality engineering decisions throughout the product lifecycle
- Drive modelling-related technology initiatives and capability development, strengthening Vestas' long-term competitiveness, platform readiness, and engineering excellence
- Promote technical rigor and continuous improvement by challenging assumptions, identifying risks, and ensuring reliable, traceable, and reproducible simulation outcomes
Qualifications
- Masters or PhD in Mechanical, Structural, Aerospace/Aeronautical, Computational, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline
- 10+ years of experience in aeroelasticity, structural dynamics, and simulation of wind turbines, aircraft wings, or other flexible structures
- Hands-on expertise with aeroelastic and computational structural dynamics tools such as HAWC2, HAWCStab2, FLEX, Bladed, OpenFAST, or similar platforms
- Proven experience developing, owning, or governing modelling frameworks, solver environments, and production-grade engineering software used by engineering teams
- Strong understanding of modelling fidelity, numerical methods, solver behaviour, verification, validation, and the application of simulation results to engineering decisions
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, provide technical leadership, challenge assumptions, and drive technology development from concept through implementation
- Experience with Python and modern engineering workflows, including software modernization, data-driven/model validation approaches, and exposure to machine-learning-supported engineering methods is considered an advantage
Competencies
To succeed in this role, you should:
- Bring deep expertise in aeroelastic modelling and simulation, with hands-on experience applying time-domain analysis and engineering modelling workflows to complex systems
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to technical excellence, ensuring high standards of model quality, validation, verification, and engineering rigor
- Be proactive and self-driven, continuously identifying opportunities to improve methodologies, tools, and ways of working
- Excel at cross-functional collaboration, providing technical guidance and influencing stakeholders across engineering disciplines and business functions
- Apply structured engineering problem-solving, including technical feasibility assessments, risk identification, root cause analysis, and evidence-based decision-making
- Communicate complex technical concepts effectively, translating advanced modelling and simulation insights into clear and actionable recommendations
- Foster technical growth within the organization, sharing knowledge, mentoring colleagues, and contributing to the development of future engineering capabilities
