The department of clinical science, intervention and technology (CLINTEC) is a clinically oriented research department characterized by its strong integration of research, healthcare, and education, in close collaboration with Karolinska University Hospital.
The division of renal medicine provides a multidisciplinary research environment that combines patient-oriented clinical research, epidemiology-biostatistics, as well as experimental research across different fields in nephrology and renal physiology. Our aim is tocontribute to advance our understanding of kidney diseases and translate research findings into more personalized strategies for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.The division also have a strong educational mission, contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist training at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University hospital.
Division
The renal medicine division conducts research at the interface of epidemiology, biostatistics, and clinical nephrology. By integrating advanced epidemiological and statistical methods with large-scale healthcare registry data, we address clinically relevant research questions aiming at improving our understanding of kidney diseases and patient outcomes. The division has extensive experience in observational research, clinical trials and international collaborations.
Duties
This postdoctoral scholarship offers the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary research projects on kidney diseases. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will conduct research on vascular access in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease using real-word data from the national Swedish Renal Registry. Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing study protocol and statistical analysis plan
- Planning and conducting observational studies using real-world registry data
- Performing data management and advanced statistical analyses using the target trial emulation framework
- Interpreting and communicating the research findings in international scientific conferences
- Writing scientific articles for publication in peer-review journals
- Contributing to collaborative research projects within the renal medicine division and with national and international partners.
Entry requirements
Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. A foreign researcher is a person living in another country who comes to Sweden with the intention of only staying in Sweden for all or part of their postdoctoral education at KI. Persons who are resident in Sweden and/or have carried out all or part of their academic education at KI or some other educational institution in Sweden cannot be considered for scholarships. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post-doctoral education.
Furthermore, you need the following in order to be eligible for this scholarship:* PhD in epidemiology-biostatistics
- Documented expertise in renal epidemiology research using large-scale healthcare registries and complex observational datasets
- Documented experience in causal inference and/ or in advanced statistical methods using nationwide registry data
- Proficiency in statistical programming using R
- Documented experience in teaching epidemiology-biostatistics as well in students supervision
It is considered meritorious if you have the following:
- A background in mathematics applied to public health
- Prior knowledge in kidney disease
- A strong publication record
- Excellent scientific writing skills
The candidate should be motivated and well-organized, with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative research projects within the team. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential, together with strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
